Nude
The human body is considered aesthetically pleasing by most people and is familiar to everyone. Many considered the true test of skill for an artist was the human form. Clothing that form is like cheating, using it to cover up the bits the artist had not mastered. The human body is a very good way to convey abstract emotion without using words. Clothes just clutter things. Nude sculpting was very popular with Ancient Greeks. The Greek culture had a huge influence on Roman culture, which in turn influenced the entirety of Western culture.
