Ballet Dancer by Garison Machingiri, Springstone, Unique, 204cm high by 54cm wide by 80cm deep, Abstract, Figurative, Female, Black, Sculpture

Ballet Dancer is a commanding springstone sculpture by Shona artist Garison Machingiri. Rising to 204 cm in height and measuring 54 cm wide by 80 cm deep, the work captures a nude female figure suspended mid-ballet movement. From the outset, the sculpture communicates balance, control, and physical energy.

Rather than fully defining the figure, Machingiri intentionally abstracts it. He removes the head, arms, and lower legs, then leaves these areas as rough, uncut stone. In contrast, he carefully sculpts the torso and upper legs into smooth, flowing forms. This shift in texture immediately draws the eye to the body’s central movement. As the figure lifts one leg into a bent pose, curved lines guide the viewer through the composition and reinforce the sense of dance.

At the same time, the surface treatment strengthens the visual impact. The polished springstone turns a deep, rich black, emphasising the elegance of the carved areas. Meanwhile, the untouched sections remain a softer grey, clearly marking the boundary between refined form and natural material. This interplay of colour and texture creates rhythm across the sculpture.

Through Ballet Dancer, Machingiri explores the relationship between movement and stillness, abstraction and realism. The sculpture rewards close viewing from multiple angles. Overall, the work stands as a unique and expressive example of contemporary Shona sculpture, well suited to gallery spaces, architectural interiors, or outdoor settings where its scale and material can fully resonate.
