Armed Halliday Avray-Wilson, Born 1967, Herm, Steel, Unique, 240cm high, Army, Man, Weapon, Brown

Armed Herm by Halliday Avray-Wilson is a striking and provocative figurative sculpture, standing 240cm tall and forged entirely from steel. Unique in both concept and execution, the work takes inspiration from the classical herm. A form originating in ancient Greek sculpture where a bust or figure is mounted on a squared pillar. Often featuring prominent male genitalia.

In this contemporary interpretation, the artist presents a stylised male form, forged with a raw and industrial sensibility. The figure rises with solid vertical presence, its surface textured and rugged, characteristic of hand-worked steel. From the central body, a bold appendage extends from the crotch area, both a literal and symbolic gesture. The appendage drawing direct reference to the classical tradition while intentionally confronting modern viewers with themes of masculinity, virility, and power.

Despite its simplified, pillar-like form, the sculpture conveys a strong human presence. The contrast between the elemental force of steel and the classical motif creates tension, bridging ancient symbolism with contemporary commentary on gender, identity, and form.

Avray-Wilson challenges the viewer to consider how historical archetypes of the male figure are reinterpreted through modern materials and perspectives. Bold, unapologetic, and layered with meaning, the sculpture asserts itself as a conversation piece, both timeless and sharply current.
