Pre-Hysteric by Andrew Sinclair, Bronze Resin, From Edition of 5, 340cm high by 410cm wide by 130cm deep. Animals and Birds, Fantasy, Humorous sculpture, Queen, Hat, Nude, Dinosaur, Riding

Pre-Hysteric by Andrew Sinclair is a figurative bronze resin sculpture from an edition of five. The piece measuring 340 cm high, 410 cm wide, and 130 cm deep. The piece depicts a plump, nude woman riding atop a Struthiomimus dinosaur. The dinosaur strides forward with one foot raised, its arms tucked close to its chest, and its head turned slightly to the side. A metal bit rests in its mouth, attached to reins held by the rider.

The woman sits near the dinosaur’s back, her legs bent and one hand gripping her hat to keep it secure. Her polished bronze surface contrasts with the dinosaur’s painted body. The dinosaur shows a mix of colours and highlights the leathery texture of its skin. The smoothness of the woman emphasizes her form and presence, while the dinosaur’s details create a sense of movement and life.

The composition balances whimsy, fantasy, and dynamic motion. The dinosaur’s stride and angled posture convey momentum, while the woman’s playful pose adds humor and character. Pre-Hysteric merges realism and imagination, combining intricate detailing with a bold, narrative quality. Its contrasting surfaces, expressive figures, and grand scale make it both striking and memorable.

Inspiration

In the artists words:
“Sadly or gladly, I never grew out of my fascination for dinosaurs and promised myself that one day I would sculpt one. During a brief respite in my usual busy routine I realized this ambition and sculpted a rather obscure dinosaur called a Struthiomimus; a very gracile and elegant creature that is popularly known as an ‘Ostrich mimic’. Having sculpted the extinct creature came the question of  ‘What to do with it now?’. After some thought the bizarre idea of putting a lady riding upon it, in a sense of panic, came to mind. It makes a very strange, humorous and surreal sculpture. The technical aspect of actually making the sculpture stand is considerable, as the supporting leg is so thin but it is this that helps make the sculpture so full of movement.”
