Sleeper1 by Joseph Hillier, Steel on oak, Unique, 29cm high, 61cm wide, 20cm deep, sculpture
Sleeper1 by Joseph Hillier is a unique steel sculpture on an oak base. It measures 29cm high, 61cm wide, and 20cm deep. The piece shows a woman lying on her side, her pose calm yet full of quiet presence. One hand rests beneath her head, the other touches her knee. Her legs bend slightly upward, giving her position a natural ease. She appears to rest on something unseen, rather than lying flat against the oak below.
The artist builds the figure from layered sheets of steel. Each layer shifts slightly from the next, breaking the form into uneven planes. This technique gives the body both weight and movement. From one angle, the layers align into a smooth contour. From another, the figure breaks into lines and shadows that seem to ripple across her shape. The play between solid form and fractured surface brings a sense of tension to her stillness.
Although abstracted, the body remains recognisable. The curve of her back, the tilt of her head, and the fold of her knees all hold to human familiarity. The hardness of steel contrasts with the softness of her pose. At the same time, the oak base adds warmth, grounding the figure in balance.
Hillier captures rest, but not in a static way. Instead, he shows rest as fragile and shifting, caught between strength and vulnerability. The sculpture feels intimate yet monumental, as if sleep itself has been frozen in steel.
