I Spirit by Teresa Wells, Bronze on Stone covered base, Edition 1 of 9, 180cm high by 100cm wide by 130cm deep, Figurative sculpture
I Spirit is a life-size bronze sculpture on a steel support that captures the essence of liberty, ambition and hope.
Teresa Wells MRSS is a British based figurative sculptor. In this piece she has taken the classical ballerina pose, Cambre en Arriere, and combined the curve of her body to create a bronze sculpture, which appears weightless. She employs an arc of stainless steel to project a barrier with no boundaries.
I Spirit by Teresa Wells was hired from The Sculpture Park for use in BBC1’s Dracula
Teresa Wells creates emotive figurative sculptures in bronze, that celebrate man’s physical and emotional survival over adversity. Inspired by the question “How do Humans Behave”, she draws inspiration from the contours of athletes and ballet dancers to emphasise a physical strength, placing them in precarious poses to stress fragility. She employs an illustrative style that pertains to theatrical gesturing, with particular attention made in re creating detail in the face, hands and feet. This creates a powerful and spiritual force, creating reflection on one’s own psyche. When combined with geometric architectural supports, in steel and stone, she shows a contemporary approach to bronze, lifting it off the the plinth and making it appear less monumental and traditional.
