Wood sculpture is a form of art that involves shaping wood into a desired form using a variety of techniques and tools: 

  • Wood carving: The most common technique, which involves using hand tools like knives and chisels to create a design in the wood. Carvers can create a wide range of objects, from small figurines to life-sized sculptures.
  • Woodturning: A piece of wood is rotated at high speed using a lathe or other tool, and then cut or shaped using a stationary tool. This technique is often used to create bowls, but can also be used to create intricate designs.

    Wood working: A method of creating a sculpture by using nails, screws, or other fixtures to construct the piece. The individual pieces may be worked using other techniques, such as carving or turning, and then assembled into a larger piece.

  • Chainsaw carving: began in the 1950s and is now a popular form of public art, entertainment, and even a competitive sport. Chainsaw carvers use special chains and blades, called “guide bars”, to create intricate and detailed sculptures with speed and efficiency. 
  • Driftwood sculpture: an art form that involves creating sculptures from driftwood, which is wood that has been washed up on beaches or riverbanks.

Wood sculpture is an ancient art form that allows artists to express emotions, tell stories, and preserve traditions. Some woods that are well-suited for outdoor sculptures include sweet chestnut, which can withstand wind and rain.
