Large Schooner by Mark Smith, Ceramic, Timber, Unique, 74cm high, 34cm wide, 12cm deep, Boat , Fish, Colourful, Sculpture

This piece by Mark Smith is a vibrant, contemporary sculpture that transforms a nautical subject into a playful work of art. Measuring 74 cm high, 34 cm wide, and 12 cm deep, this unique piece depicts a large, colourful boat crafted from ceramic and mounted on a timber plinth. The sculpture captures the essence of maritime life while celebrating Smith’s distinctive approach to form, colour, and texture.

The piece draws attention with its bold palette and stylized design. Brightly glazed surfaces highlight the boat’s hull and sails, while subtle textural details evoke the motion of water and the spirit of a schooner at sea. Smith’s use of ceramic allows for precision and fluidity, while the timber base adds warmth and natural contrast, grounding the sculpture in a visually appealing display. Together, these elements create a dynamic interplay between colour, material, and shape, ensuring the work resonates both as a decorative object and as a statement piece.

Large Schooner also conveys narrative charm. Its exaggerated lines and playful proportions suggest a whimsical, almost storybook interpretation of a classic sailing vessel, making it an engaging addition to modern interiors, gallery spaces, or nautical-themed collections. The sculpture balances artistic sophistication with accessibility, appealing to collectors, design enthusiasts, and admirers of contemporary ceramic art alike.

Ultimately, Mark Smith’s Large Schooner demonstrates how functional subject matter can become a vehicle for imaginative expression. Its combination of vibrant colour, meticulous craftsmanship, and striking presence makes it a memorable sculptural experience. By merging artistic vision with playful design, the work offers both aesthetic delight and a celebration of life at sea.
