Aluminium sculptures are popular with artists as the material is lightweight, strong, flexible, and corrosion-resistantIt can be molded, extruded, riveted, welded, and painted. Aluminium is also relatively affordable and can be used to create large-scale outdoor sculptures. 

  • Hand of God
    This 4-meter long, 400-kilogram sculpture is part of a worldwide public art program by Lorenzo Quinn. It was cast from a mold using the sand cast process. 

  • Play-Doh
    This $20 million sculpture by Jeff Koons is made up of 27 interlocking sections of painted aluminum. 

  • Anteros
    This winged sculpture by Alfred Gilbert is located atop the Shaftesbury Memorial Fountain in Piccadilly Circus, London. It was the first statue made entirely of aluminium and was erected in 1893.

This life-sized sculpture by Charles Ray is painted milky white to resemble a classical marble statue. 

The process of casting aluminium involves: 
  1. Creating a mold of the desired shape
  2. Melting aluminum in an oven until it’s liquid
  3. Pouring the liquid aluminum into the mold
  4. Allowing the aluminum to solidify and cool in the mold
  5. Removing the aluminum casting from the mold once it’s completely cooled
