The Artist’s Words on Aloe Hierro (Iron Aloe)
This sculptures is inspired by observation and interest in plants – specifically cacti, aloes, succulents and those kinds of arid and hot climate species. These kinds of plants have an inherently graphic, relatively “simple”, sculptural form and silhouette that I love.
In the artists words!
The “latin names” for them are, of course, my invention…and both have “iron” in their titles. Hierro from Spanish (Aloes being ubiquitous in the Canaries) and Ferrum from the Latin – I didn’t realise, until I was making the latter from “T’ section steel, that there is actually a real life, 3 sided version of Euphorbia , “Triangularis”, which pleased me greatly. As “plants” I think they would fit well into The Sculpture Park or a private garden.

Aloe Hierro (Iron Aloe) is finished with Owatrol oil and natural pigments. The surface has a rich, earthy patina that enhances the layered textures and protects the steel while allowing its raw beauty to shine through. The subtle variations in colour and finish evoke the weathering of time and the blending of man-made and natural elements.
