The Protector by Taurai Mupaso, Opal Stone, Unique, 55cm high, 30cm wide, 20cm deep
The Protector by Taurai Mupaso is a distinctive Shona Opal Stone sculpture depicting a stylised owl standing alert and looking to one side. Measuring 55 cm high, 30 cm wide and 20 cm deep, this unique figurative sculpture combines minimal carving with the natural character of the stone, creating an imposing yet understated interpretation of the watchful bird.
Mupaso retains much of the original rugged surface, allowing the natural stone to define the owl’s broad body and upright stance. Rather than carving every feature in precise detail, the artist concentrates on essential shapes and carefully selected areas of refinement. Consequently, the owl appears to emerge directly from the raw material, balancing recognisable animal form with a distinctly sculptural quality.
Moreover, the head turns to the side as though the owl is observing its surroundings. The eyes and beak have been polished, producing a deep black colour that contrasts dramatically with the lighter, rougher Opal Stone around them. As a result, these key facial features immediately draw the viewer’s attention and strengthen the sculpture’s alert expression.
Meanwhile, the back remains largely untouched, preserving the irregular texture and character of the original stone. This deliberate contrast between rugged and smoothed surfaces gives The Protector a strong tactile quality while highlighting the transformation from natural material into figurative sculpture.
Furthermore, the owl’s solid proportions and attentive pose complement the protective character suggested by the title. Its restrained detailing allows shape, texture and material to remain central to the composition.
Ultimately, The Protector combines raw natural beauty with carefully controlled carving. As a unique Taurai Mupaso sculpture, it offers a compelling example of contemporary Zimbabwean Shona stone carving and a distinctive addition to a collection of African or animal sculpture.
