Style & Subject
Taurai is known for abstract and figurative sculpture, with a strong focus on owl figures, earning himself the nickname “Owl-man.” His work reinterprets owls as charming creatures, sculpting them to invoke sympathy by transforming them into whimsical, friendly, and almost comical characters. Owls are often feared in African traditions, being associated with witchcraft and as harbingers of evil and death. Through his approach to sculpting them in such a way, he seeks to challenge and change negative perceptions of these birds.
