Winged Angel by Tinei Mashaya is a unique Shona sculpture carved from springstone, measuring 220 cm high by 50 cm wide by 40 cm deep. The work rises vertically with a calm yet commanding presence. Its simplified form focuses on gesture and direction rather than detailed anatomy.
The figure reduces the body to a tall, curving shape that grounds the sculpture. This solid base supports the expressive elements above. From it, two wings extend in contrasting directions. One wing rests downward along the side, creating balance and weight. In contrast, the other wing reaches straight upward, directing the eye toward the sky. This upward movement defines the composition and reinforces a sense of aspiration.
The wings remain flat in structure, yet Mashaya carves detailed curves and feather patterns across their surfaces. These carved lines introduce rhythm and texture without breaking the overall simplicity. The contrast between flat form and detailed carving adds clarity and focus.
Above, the head tilts upward. The eyes remain closed, and the lips purse gently, suggesting calm reflection or quiet devotion. Long, wavy hair flows backward from the head. It mirrors the wings in carving style, with repeated curves that unify the composition. The hair and wings visually echo one another, strengthening the sense of movement and lift.
The sculpture is smoothed and polished overall, producing a deep black finish typical of springstone. However, the wings and hair retain a slightly rougher texture. As a result, they appear lighter, with soft grey tones that catch the light differently.
Overall, Winged Angel balances stillness with upward motion. Through simplified form, directional gesture, and controlled texture, the sculpture conveys serenity, elevation, and quiet strength.

The Sculpture Park will be in contact after purchase to arrange a delivery date. Delivery will require at least 2 people, which will be provided by The Sculpture Park wherever possible. We can provide an installation service upon request, email Sian at sian@thesculpturepark.com to discuss details. Delivery and installation will be provided by The Sculpture Park for mainland Great Britain, excluding the Channel Islands, Scottish Highlands and Republic of Ireland. A mainland courier company will handle any onward shipping.
