Africa’s Pride by Vengai Chiwawa, Springstone, Unique, 72cm high, 50cm wide, 30cm deep, Animals and Birds, Figurative sculpture

This piece by Vengai Chiwawa is a powerful figurative sculpture carved from dense, richly toned Shona springstone. Measuring 72 cm high, 50 cm wide, and 30 cm deep, this unique work presents a commanding sculptural presence while remaining refined and finely balanced. Focused on the head of a rhinoceros, the sculpture captures the animal’s strength, resilience, and iconic status within African wildlife.

Chiwawa approaches the subject with clarity and restraint, allowing form and surface to convey meaning without excess detail. The broad planes of the rhino’s face transition smoothly into gently rounded contours, while subtle textural shifts suggest thick skin and underlying power. The horns rise with quiet authority, anchoring the composition and reinforcing the sculpture’s symbolic weight. Every angle reveals careful attention to proportion and flow, ensuring visual impact from all viewpoints.

The polished springstone surface enhances natural colour variations within the stone, adding depth and warmth while reflecting light softly across the form. This finish elevates the sculpture beyond representation, giving it a timeless, gallery-level presence. The balance between realism and abstraction allows the work to feel both immediate and enduring.

Rooted in the Shona stone sculpture tradition, Africa’s Pride celebrates Zimbabwean craftsmanship and cultural connection to the natural world. At the same time, it speaks to broader themes of conservation, dignity, and survival.

Ideal for collectors of animal sculpture, African art, or contemporary stone carving, this figurative work stands as a bold statement piece—one that honours the majesty of the rhinoceros while showcasing Vengai Chiwawa’s confident sculptural voice.
