Mosquito by Martin Scorey is a striking modern sculpture that transforms a familiar insect into a monumental and thought-provoking work of art. Standing 98 cm high, with a width of 70 cm and a depth of 45 cm, the piece combines lead, steel, and wood to create a hybrid of natural form and contemporary design. From the outset, the oversized scale commands attention, inviting viewers to reconsider the mosquito in both detail and abstraction.

Scorey emphasizes structure, line, and texture to bring the insect to life. The elongated body, delicate legs, and angled wings convey fragility and tension, while the combination of metals and wood introduces strength and contrast. Moreover, the interplay of materials allows light to interact differently across surfaces, the reflective steel catches highlights, the matte lead emphasizes weight, and the warm wood adds a natural, organic element. Together, these materials create a dynamic visual rhythm that guides the viewer’s eye across the form.

In addition, the sculpture balances realism with abstraction. While the insect is instantly recognizable, Scorey exaggerates proportions and textures to emphasize movement, energy, and presence. The sharp angles of the legs and wings introduce tension, while the carefully modelled body conveys motion poised to strike.

As a unique piece, Mosquito showcases Scorey’s mastery of material and form, as well as his ability to fuse natural inspiration with sculptural innovation. Through thoughtful composition, contrasting textures, and dramatic scale, the sculpture transforms a familiar creature into a compelling, modern work of art, capturing both the beauty and the menace of the natural world.
