Angel II is a powerful example of Michael McManus’s ability to breathe life into wood. He works through a language of abstraction and subtle gesture. Carved from burr elm, the sculpture’s flowing form reveals the grace of the angelic figure and the unique character of the timber. Its whorls and knots echo the complexity of the human spirit.
The figure stands tall yet seems weightless. Its head tilts slightly upward. The arms reach outward in a quiet, expressive arc, suggesting both an embrace and a dance. Through this open gesture, McManus hints at freedom and timeless motion, an angel poised between earth and sky.
His work often explores the meeting point of nature, spirituality, and the human form. In this piece, the angel’s abstract features and elongated lines invite the viewer to complete the figure. Each person finds their own sense of serenity and strength within it. The raw edges and smooth curves of the elm speak of transformation, the living tree reborn as a symbol of hope and grace.
Delivery & Installation
The Sculpture Park will be in contact after purchase to arrange a delivery date. Delivery will require at least 1 person, which will be provided by The Sculpture Park wherever possible. We can provide an installation service upon request, email Sian at sian@thesculpturepark.com to discuss details. Delivery and installation will be provided by The Sculpture Park for mainland Great Britain, excluding the Channel Islands, Scottish Highlands and Republic of Ireland. A mainland courier company will handle any onward shipping.
