Giant Balloon Press III by Wilfred Pritchard transforms an original wood and steel book press into a stage for the surreal. A giant yellow balloon squeezes through the press, trapped yet resisting the crushing force. The sculpture creates a striking tension between strength and fragility, weight and levity, permanence and impermanence.
The press, solid and industrial, presses down with mechanical authority. The balloon, delicate and buoyant, defies expectation. Pritchard plays with scale, exaggerating the balloon’s size to create humour, surprise, and a sense of absurdity. Viewers sense both delight and unease in this impossible moment frozen in time.
Pritchard casts the balloon in bronze, giving permanence to what is usually temporary. The steel and wood press anchors the work in reality, while the exaggerated balloon transforms it into a theatrical, surreal scene. He manipulates materials and found objects to subvert their original purpose. The press no longer binds books; it engages in a playful struggle with an inflated shape.
The work invites reflection. It challenges viewers to reconsider the ordinary. Heavy machinery becomes whimsical. Everyday objects become metaphors for fragility, resistance, and the unexpected. Delivery & Installation
The Sculpture Park will be in contact after purchase to arrange a delivery date. Delivery will require at least 1 person, which will be provided by The Sculpture Park wherever possible. We can provide an installation service upon request, email Sian at sian@thesculpturepark.com to discuss details. Delivery and installation will be provided by The Sculpture Park for mainland Great Britain, excluding the Channel Islands, Scottish Highlands and Republic of Ireland. A mainland courier company will handle any onward shipping.
