Pride (1990) by James Copper, Portland Stone, Unique. 105 cm high, 65 cm wide, 34 cm deep, Figurative, Man, Male Sculpture
This piece is a striking figurative sculpture by James Copper(opens in new tab), carved from timeless Portland stone. Created in 1990, this unique work stands at just over a metre tall and depicts a human figure from the waist up, turning their head gracefully to the left. The gesture is subtle, yet deeply expressive, suggesting thoughtfulness, quiet confidence, or perhaps a moment of private resolve.
The sculpture balances strength with sensitivity. Smooth contours and purposeful angles give the form a grounded presence, while the turn of the head introduces a gentle dynamism. The figure feels alive, caught mid-thought, mid-breath, inviting viewers to share in its stillness and sense of self.
Carved from Portland stone(opens in new tab), Pride carries the natural weight and texture of the British landscape. The material’s muted tones and fine grain enhance the work’s contemplative tone, grounding the emotional content in something solid and enduring.
As a unique piece, Pride holds a singular place in Copper’s body of work. It offers collectors and curators a rare opportunity to own a one-of-a-kind expression of human dignity and introspection. Whether displayed in a garden setting, contemporary interior, or private collection, this sculpture commands quiet attention.
