Blown Away by Godfrey Matangira is a striking Shona Springstone sculpture that combines figurative carving with expressive abstraction and a powerful sense of movement. Measuring 62 cm high, 55 cm wide and 22 cm deep, this unique bust depicts a figure whose dramatically fanned hair spreads out around the head, creating an energetic and instantly recognisable silhouette.
Matangira simplifies the figure’s features while retaining a strong sense of human character. In contrast, the hair becomes the most dynamic element of the composition, expanding outwards as though caught by a sudden gust of wind. Flowing carved lines travel across its surface, creating a rhythmic pattern that suggests individual strands moving together. Consequently, the solid Springstone appears remarkably animated, capturing the sensation of movement within a permanent material.
Moreover, Matangira uses contrasting finishes to separate the face from the surrounding hair. The figure features areas of smoothly polished black Springstone, which give the face a rich depth and refined appearance. Meanwhile, the hair retains a lighter grey finish, allowing its carved lines and broad fanned shape to stand apart visually. As a result, colour, texture and form work together to strengthen the sculpture’s dramatic character.

The Sculpture Park will be in contact after purchase to arrange a delivery date. Delivery will require at least 1 person, which will be provided by The Sculpture Park wherever possible. We can provide an installation service upon request, email Sian at sian@thesculpturepark.com to discuss details. Delivery and installation will be provided by The Sculpture Park for mainland Great Britain, excluding the Channel Islands, Scottish Highlands and Republic of Ireland. A mainland courier company will handle any onward shipping.
