Preying Mantis by Iain Tatum, Metal, Steel, Unique, 300cm high by 300cm wide by 250cm deep, Available

Preying Mantis by Iain Tatum towers 300 centimetres high, spanning 300 centimetres wide and 250 centimetres deep, presenting a monumental figurative sculpture in steel. The piece depicts a preying mantis with its forearms raised, poised in both defence and readiness. Rather than simply reproducing the insect’s form, Tatum interprets it dynamically, emphasizing angularity, rhythm, and the striking tension inherent in the creature’s stance.

From the first glance, the sculpture captures attention with its commanding scale. As viewers approach, the elongated limbs and spiked forearms draw the eye upward, while the sharply angled head and thorax convey alertness and precision. Moreover, the polished steel surfaces interact with light, producing glints and reflections that enhance the sense of movement and energy. Shadows form in the recesses, further articulating the mantis’s segmented body and creating a dramatic interplay between solid form and negative space.

The composition balances menace and elegance. In addition, Tatum abstracts certain details, exaggerating the insect’s signature features, the raptorial forearms, the bent legs, and the triangular head, to amplify both visual impact and expressive tension. As viewers move around the sculpture, each perspective reveals new alignments of limbs and planes, heightening the impression that the mantis is alive, poised, and ready to strike.
