My First Born Daughter by Rufaro Murenza, Springstone, Unique, 135cm high by 36cm wide by 30cm deep, Children, Family, Female, Figurative, People, Women, Love sculpture
My First Born Daughter by Rufaro Murenza is a powerful and emotive Shona sculpture carved from springstone. Standing 135cm high and 36cm wide, it captures the deep bond between a mother and her child with graceful simplicity.
The mother stands tall behind her daughter, her arms wrapped protectively around the young girl. Their bodies curve gently into one another, forming a unified shape that speaks of love, trust, and connection. Murenza avoids intricate details, instead focusing on smooth, flowing forms that emphasize emotion over realism.
Polished surfaces reflect light softly, drawing attention to the warmth and strength of the figures. Rougher textures in select areas add contrast and depth. The daughter leans slightly into the embrace, while the mother’s posture conveys both support and pride.
This sculpture doesn’t just depict a moment, it celebrates a relationship. Murenza draws from the Shona tradition, where family remains a vital theme. He shapes the stone with care and intention, allowing the viewer to feel the emotional core without distraction.
Ideal for either an indoor or garden setting, My First Born Daughter invites reflection. It reminds us of our first connections, of care freely given, and of the strength that passes from one generation to the next. The sculpture resonates with anyone who values family, legacy, and love.
