Icarus II by Nicola Godden MRSS (b. 1959), Bronze, Limited to 12, 173 cm high x 165 cm wide x 140 cm deep
Icarus II is a striking figurative bronze sculpture by Nicola Godden. This powerful piece depicts Icarus, the figure from Greek mythology who dared to fly too close to the sun. His wings stretch wide, capturing the moment of flight and the spirit of freedom and risk.
Godden’s detailed modelling brings Icarus to life. Muscles, feathers, and the flowing lines of the figure show both strength and vulnerability. The outstretched wings suggest hope and ambition but also hint at the story’s tragic fall.
The bronze surface has a timeless quality. Light plays across the wings and body, highlighting the form and adding movement to the piece. Icarus II celebrates the human desire to reach beyond limits, even when it comes with danger.
This sculpture stands as a bold centrepiece in any space, indoors or outside. It invites viewers to reflect on courage, ambition, and the cost of dreaming too high. Icarus II shows Nicola Godden’s skill in transforming classical mythology into contemporary art that feels alive and inspiring.
