Horse Head by Brendan Hesmondhalgh, Hand Built Stoneware, Ceramic, Unique, 218cm including plinth high, Animals and birds, Figurative sculpture
Horse Head by Brendan Hesmondhalgh is a 218 cm high hand-built stoneware ceramic sculpture, including plinth. The piece depicts a horse bust, blending realistic proportions with subtle stylisation.
The horse’s neck curves naturally, leading its head to rest lightly against the small chest included in the sculpture. Its head faces forward, ears pricked and pointing in the same direction, giving the impression of alertness and quiet strength. The posture captures both presence and elegance, emphasising the horse’s graceful form.
The surface combines rugged textures with bold sculpted areas. Gaps run throughout the stoneware, the largest at the eyes, allowing light to pass through and adding an ethereal quality. Tool marks and carving lines remain visible, giving a tactile sense of craftsmanship. The piece is covered in a deep, dusty brown, unifying the sculpture while highlighting its textural details.
Mounted on a plinth, the bust commands attention. The forward-facing head and curved neck guide the viewer’s eye, while the open gaps and sculptural depth invite closer inspection. The balance between solid form and empty space creates a dynamic tension, enhancing the piece’s visual impact.
Horse Head conveys strength, alertness, and subtle elegance. Through its posture, texture, and careful stylisation, the sculpture captures the essence of a horse in a powerful and striking way.
