Hippo Bird Bath by Timothy Rukodzi, Opal Stone, Unique, 27cm high, 90cm wide, 42cm deep, Animal, Africa, Hippopotomus, Basin, Sculpture
Hippo Bird Bath by Timothy Rukodzi is a unique Shona sculpture made from Opal Stone, measuring 27cm high, 90cm wide, and 42cm deep. The piece features a hippo, its body resting on the ground with its short legs tucked close to its torso. The hippo’s large, detailed head looks around, alert and aware of its surroundings.
The most striking feature of the sculpture is the hollowed back of the hippo. The back is carefully carved out, with a slight slope at the rear end, forming a functional bird bath. Two smaller hippo heads are placed within the basin, appearing as if they are submerged in water. This clever design adds a playful touch, making the piece both visually interesting and functional.
The sculpture is smoothed and polished, allowing the natural greens of the Opal Stone to shine through, creating a rich, vibrant effect. Some areas, particularly around the back of the hippo’s body, are left rougher, adding texture and contrast to the piece. This juxtaposition between smooth and rough areas highlights the craftsmanship and attention to detail in the sculpture.
Hippo Bird Bath blends the natural beauty of the Opal Stone with a whimsical design, offering a functional and artistic interpretation of the hippo while celebrating the animal’s form and the tranquil scene of a bird bath.
