Timothy Rukodzi

BORN
Timothy Rukodzi was born on 12 May 1975 in Wedza District, Zimbabwe.

EARLY LIFE
Timothy grew up in Zimbabwe and left school at the age of 16 due to financial difficulties. He later moved to Mbare, Harare, where he began learning stone carving under the guidance of the craftsman Murehwa, who taught him how to work with serpentine stone.

CAREER
Timothy began creating his own sculptures in 2002 and has since developed an independent practice as a sculptor in Harare. He works primarily within the Shona sculptural tradition and has built a career producing both individual works and commissioned pieces.

MATERIALS
He works mainly in hard stones, including springstone, cobalt stone, opal stone, and serpentine.

STYLE AND SUBJECTS
His work is rooted in the Shona carving tradition and includes figures, torsos, and animal forms. One of his favourite subjects to sculpt is the hippopotamus, which he explores in a variety of forms, both as sculptures or as functional birdbaths. His work reflects both technical skill and a strong connection to Zimbabwean sculptural heritage.
