Gaia-Earth Mother by Nicola Godden, Bronze, Edition of 9, 76cm high, Body, Figurative, Nature sculpture

Nicola Godden’s Gaia,  Earth Mother is a stylised bronze sculpture that captures the essence of the crouching female form. Representing Gaia, the ancient personification of Earth and motherhood, the piece radiates both strength and serenity. Godden’s minimalist approach strips away unnecessary detail, allowing the flowing lines and grounded pose to speak for themselves. The figure’s fluid contours suggest growth and movement, while its low, rooted stance reflects stability and a deep connection to nature. This harmony between form and meaning celebrates the timeless bond between the body and the earth, embodying the nurturing and resilient spirit of womanhood.

Godden studied sculpture at the West Surrey College of Art and Design and began her career with a commission from landscape designer Roddy Llewellyn. Her early work gained recognition when featured in his book Beautiful Backyards. Since then, she has produced numerous large scale public commissions, including Hammersmith Man, unveiled by George Melly in 1987, and the Peter Scott Memorial Sculpture at the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust in Barnes, unveiled by Sir David Attenborough in 2000. Her celebrated Icarus sculpture appeared at the Chelsea Flower Show and later in the London 2012 Olympic Village.

As Godden explains, her inspiration always returns to the human figure, abstract or realistic, for its power to express emotion and narrative. Gaia, Earth Mother continues this exploration, offering an elegant and contemplative tribute to life’s origins and the enduring strength of the feminine form.
