Scissor Form by John Sydney Carter, Bronze, Edition Unknown, 241cms high by 95cms wide by 92cms deep, Abstract, Figurative, Geometric sculpture

Scissor Form by John Sydney Carter combines abstraction, geometry, and figurative suggestion into a striking bronze sculpture. The piece presents a vertically oriented form that balances angular planes with subtle curves, thereby creating tension between rigidity and fluidity. Rather than depicting a recognizable figure, Carter emphasizes geometric relationships and spatial dynamics, allowing the viewer to interpret movement and form simultaneously. As a result, the sculpture operates as both a study of structure and an expressive presence in space.

Standing an impressive 241 cm high and measuring 95 cm wide by 92 cm deep, the work dominates its surroundings while encouraging close examination. Its intersecting planes and sharp edges catch and reflect light in varying ways, while the smooth bronze surfaces provide contrast through polished highlights and subtle shadows. Moreover, the angular forms suggest human or abstracted figurative elements, so that viewers perceive both familiarity and abstraction within a single composition.

Furthermore, the sculpture invites exploration from multiple perspectives. The shifting angles and overlapping shapes create changing silhouettes, thereby emphasizing its dynamic, almost kinetic quality.

Through Scissor Form, Carter demonstrates how bronze can convey both strength and elegance. By combining geometric rigor, figurative suggestion, and thoughtful spatial composition, he transforms a solid material into a visually compelling abstract statement. Consequently, the sculpture engages viewers intellectually and emotionally, encouraging them to navigate its planes and interpret its ambiguous yet powerful presence in the space it occupies.
