“Bronte” (2016) by Dawn Conn Mixed Media, Unique Piece, 152 cm high (including plinth), 90 cm wide, 70 cm deep Plinth height: 77 cm, Sculpture height: 75 cm
Bronte is a joyful and expressive mixed media sculpture by Dawn Conn, created in 2016. Depicting a spirited woman poised to dive, the piece brims with energy, anticipation, and charm. Dressed in a bright red swimsuit with matching cap and goggles, she instantly evokes carefree seaside days and nostalgic summer memories. The piece is a celebration of movement, playfulness, and freedom.
Conn’s signature style shines through in the dynamic pose and whimsical character. The elongated limbs reflect her admiration for Swiss sculptor Alberto Giacometti, an influence seen in the elegant, stretched proportions.
Hand-worked textures and the rich interplay of mixed materials give the piece individuality and depth.
The sculpture’s title carries personal meaning for the artist who has long admired the works of the Brontë sisters. The name also recalls a period when she and her husband lived beside Bronte Beach in Australia. This experience deepened her connection to the sea and lends the work an added layer of authenticity.
Because of its delicate materials, Bronte is best displayed indoors or in a sheltered outdoor setting. Weather could affect her vibrant colours and surface detail while a protected location will preserve her charm for years to come.
In 2018, Conn moved away from mixed media to focus on bronze resin and foundry bronze works. Bronte is a rare example of her earlier tactile style. She no longer produces sculptures like this for sale, enhancing its uniqueness and appeal to collectors.
Conn also reached a wider audience through her appearance on Home Is Where the Art Is, where she was selected to create a seaside-themed piece for buyers in Whitstable. The programme highlighted her ability to connect with audiences through joyful, emotionally rich work.
