Big G by Vilas Silverton, 70cm high, 50cm wide, 30cm deep, Clay, Underglaze, Acrylic Paint, Metal Leaf, Varnish, Unique, Body, Man, Religion sculpture
Big G by Vilas Silverton is a bold and expressive sculpture standing 70cm high, 50cm wide, and 30cm deep. Created from clay and finished with underglaze, acrylic paint, metal leaf, and varnish, this unique work draws deeply from the artist’s exploration of spirituality, ritual, and the human condition.
Part of Silverton’s Zen Rogue Portraits series, Big G challenges conventional portrayals of holiness. Instead of idealized saints with serene expressions and gleaming halos, Silverton presents a more raw and human vision of spiritual potential. The figure exudes presence, at once humble and powerful, with deliberate imperfections that evoke both vulnerability and strength. Layers of texture, gilding, and painted surfaces emphasize the contrast between inner light and outer reality.
Silverton draws inspiration from religious statuary and devotional icons, yet reinterprets them through a contemporary and personal lens. Big G is particularly influenced by a portrait bust of St. Gregory the Moor, reimagined here as a tribute not only to the historic work, but to the broader idea of sainthood as a journey, not a fixed state.
Through Big G, Silverton invites viewers to reconsider what spirituality looks like. The sculpture doesn’t demand reverence through perfection, but instead earns it through authenticity and emotional depth, embodying a “saint-in-the-making” for a modern, searching world.
