Turning Big Cat by Bill Prickett is a unique contemporary wooden sculpture measuring 87 cm high, 118 cm wide, and 90 cm deep. The piece captures a powerful feline mid-stride, caught in the instant of twisting its body as it runs. Its head snaps to the right, eyes focused, while both front paws press into the ground, ready to push off and kick back. Even though the sculpture stops at the rib cage, the motion feels complete. The shallow, smoothed cavity where the back half should be still flows naturally into the forward momentum.
Prickett carves the cat with streamlined detail. The body shows strong shoulders, tense muscles, and a defined face without becoming overly intricate. Instead, the sculpture celebrates movement more than anatomy. The cat looks alert and agile, its pose suggesting both speed and awareness. As you move around the sculpture, the angle of the turn becomes more dramatic, emphasizing the animal’s instinct to react quickly.
The wood itself heightens this sense of motion. Its natural rings shift in colour from warm browns to lighter bands, creating patterns that run along the cat’s body like living muscle fibres. These lines stretch with the pose, adding energy to the sculpture without needing extra carved detail. The smooth finish invites light to skim across the contours, highlighting the animal’s sleek power.
Prickett’s Turning Big Cat feels alive in its incompleteness. By removing the back half, he focuses attention on the moment of action itself, pure instinct, tension, and direction. The result is bold, dynamic, and surprisingly realistic, even within a contemporary style.

The Sculpture Park will be in contact after purchase to arrange a delivery date. Delivery will require at least 1 person, which will be provided by The Sculpture Park wherever possible. We can provide an installation service upon request, email Sian at sian@thesculpturepark.com to discuss details. Delivery and installation will be provided by The Sculpture Park for mainland Great Britain, excluding the Channel Islands, Scottish Highlands and Republic of Ireland. A mainland courier company will handle any onward shipping.
