We Are Travellers by Victor Matafi is a Shona sculpture carved from opal stone. Standing 179 cm high, 46 cm wide, and 50 cm deep, the piece presents an abstract composition of tall, twirling forms that loop and fold within themselves. The sculpture rises in a single continuous line, its motion fluid yet compact. As the form grows upward, it leans gently to one side, creating a sense of movement and journey.
The surface of the opal stone is smoothed and polished, revealing its natural tones of earthy browns and greens. These colours shift with the light, giving the sculpture depth and vitality. The polished finish enhances the flowing curves, while the compact structure grounds the work, balancing motion with stability.
Matafi captures a rhythm of travel and connection through the intertwined shapes. The looping lines suggest paths that cross and return, much like the journeys people make in life. The upward rise conveys progression and aspiration, while the slight lean adds character and individuality to the form.
We Are Travellers feels both symbolic and organic. Its abstract design avoids literal representation, instead evoking an emotional sense of movement and continuity. The sculpture celebrates the idea of shared journeys, transformation, and resilience, all expressed through the elegant twisting flow of stone.

The Sculpture Park will be in contact after purchase to arrange a delivery date. Delivery will require specialised equipment, which will be provided by The Sculpture Park and outside sources. We can provide an installation service upon request, please email Sian at sian@thesculpturepark.com to discuss details. Delivery and installation will be provided by The Sculpture Park for mainland Great Britain, excluding the Channel Islands, Scottish Highlands and Republic of Ireland. A mainland courier company will handle any onward shipping.
