Three Generations by Ishmael Chitiyo, Cobalt Stone, Unique, 66cm high by 59cm wide by 16cm deep, Family, Female, Figurative, Male, Men, People, Women, Love sculpture
This piece by Ishmael Chitiyo is a unique Shona cobalt stone sculpture measuring 66cm high, 59cm wide, and 16cm deep. This powerful piece features three abstract faces, each representing a different generation. The faces are aligned side by side and turned in the same direction, creating a sense of unity and continuity across time.
The layering of the faces adds depth and dimension, symbolizing how generations overlap and influence one another. The cobalt stone’s rich, deep blue tones enhance the sculpture’s striking visual impact, while its smooth, polished surface emphasizes the refined craftsmanship.
Chitiyo uses abstraction to convey the essence of family and legacy without focusing on specific features. This choice invites viewers to connect with the universal theme of generational bonds rather than individual identities.
Through simple yet evocative forms, Three Generations captures the flow of heritage, wisdom, and shared experience. The sculpture suggests a forward-looking gaze, hinting at the ongoing journey of family through time.
Overall, this piece blends minimalist design with profound symbolism, celebrating the strength and continuity of family across generations. It stands as a tribute to the past, present, and future, embodied in the shared direction and layered presence of the three faces.
