Moon Head by Godfrey Kurari is a Shona stone sculpture carved from fruit serpentine. Measuring 76 cm high, 64 cm wide, and 23 cm deep, the work presents an abstract interpretation of a human head. Its form is smooth and rounded, yet bold in design. Two large discs dominate the forehead, sweeping downward to create curved shapes along the face. These arcs mimic the suggestion of closed eyes, giving the sculpture a meditative quality.
Despite its abstraction, the piece retains key human features. A nose and mouth remain clearly visible, grounding the form in figuration. The lips are softly defined, while the calm arrangement of the features conveys serenity and stillness. The subtle rises of the figures cheeks blend seamlessly into the structure, enhancing the impression of harmony.
The head rests securely on a rounded block of stone, which functions as a base. This anchor allows the figure to sit upright, while also extending the sculpture’s sense of solidity and balance. The smooth polish of the serpentine highlights its natural tones, ranging from soft greens to deeper browns, adding depth and richness to the form.
Kurari captures a quiet presence in Moon Head. Through abstract curves, simplified features, and thoughtful use of stone, the sculpture speaks of contemplation and timeless beauty. It bridges abstraction with human expression, making it both symbolic and deeply personal.
Delivery & Installation
The Sculpture Park will be in contact after purchase to arrange a delivery date. Delivery will require at least 1 person, which will be provided by The Sculpture Park wherever possible. We can provide an installation service upon request, email Sian at sian@thesculpturepark.com to discuss details. Delivery and installation will be provided by The Sculpture Park for mainland Great Britain, excluding the Channel Islands, Scottish Highlands and Republic of Ireland. A mainland courier company will handle any onward shipping.
