In Prayer by Tinei Mashaya, Springstone, Unique, 105cm high, 42cm wide, 40cm deep, Body, Female, Worship, Lady, Figurative, Religion, Spiritual sculpture
Tinei Mashaya’s In Prayer immediately captures attention with its serene presence and spiritual intensity. Carved from springstone, a dense serpentine known for its deep black and grey tones, the sculpture stands as both a figurative and expressive work of Shona art. The piece depicts a female figure with her hands lifted gracefully toward the sky, a gesture that embodies worship, reverence, and connection to the divine. Her posture radiates calm and inner strength, guiding viewers to sense both spiritual transcendence and human humility simultaneously.
The polished surfaces of her body contrast sharply with the rough, natural texture of the stone at the base. This juxtaposition grounds the sculpture, linking the sacred act of prayer to the earth while emphasizing the figure’s spiritual elevation. As the eye moves from her hands to her head and along the contours of her form, the piece conveys both motion and stillness, capturing the quiet intensity of devotion. Furthermore, the subtle abstraction in the figure’s proportions and lines directs attention to emotional expression rather than literal realism, enhancing its universal resonance.
Mashaya’s work exemplifies the Shona tradition of using stone to communicate spiritual and emotional truths. The combination of material, gesture, and form creates a powerful sense of presence, making the figure appear alive with devotion. Consequently, In Prayer appeals not only to collectors of African art but also to those drawn to themes of faith, feminine strength, and inner reflection. Its elegance and spiritual depth make it a compelling centrepiece in homes, galleries, or meditation spaces, inviting contemplation, calm, and a profound connection to both culture and the human spirit.
