Blue by Francony Kowalski, Resin, Unique, 30cm high, 30cm wide, 30cm deep, Abstract , Mortality sculpture
“Blue” by Francony Kowalski presents a striking vision of mortality through an abstract resin skull infused with soft, light blue tones. The sculpture stands at 30 centimetres in every dimension, and its cubic symmetry immediately creates a sense of balance. Yet, as the viewer draws closer, the piece disrupts that balance with its fluid textures and ghostlike translucence. Kowalski shapes the resin so it appears to shift and breathe beneath the surface, giving the skull an almost living presence.
Encased within a pristine glass box, the sculpture gains an added sense of tension. The transparent walls don’t merely protect it, they frame the skull as though it were a scientific specimen or a precious relic. Because of this, the piece invites viewers to confront themes of fragility and preservation. The glass enclosure also amplifies reflections and refracts light across the blue resin, allowing new patterns to emerge from different angles. As a result, the sculpture continually transforms, reinforcing its abstract character.
Moreover, the light blue coloration softens the traditional associations of skull imagery. Instead of evoking fear or morbidity, the colour introduces calmness and introspection. This contrast encourages viewers to reconsider their assumptions about mortality. Kowalski uses abstraction not to obscure meaning but to open space for personal interpretation. The skull becomes a symbol not just of death but of memory, transformation, and the passage of time.
