3 Generations by Isaac Choloka, Springstone, Unique, 74cm high by 47cm wide by 33cm deep, Children, Family, People, Abstract, Love sculpture
“3 Generations” is a unique stone sculpture by Zimbabwean artist Isaac Choloka, crafted from the hard, fine-grained serpentine known as Springstone. The work measures 74 cm in height, 47 cm in width, and 33 cm in depth. It depicts three abstract figures representing children and family, exploring themes of love and intergenerational connection.
Isaac Choloka, born in 1979 in Chegutu, Mashonaland West, began sculpting in 1998 after working in cartoons. He favors Springstone because of its density and ability to hold detail, which allows him to combine bold geometric shapes with refined, emotive forms. His sculptures often explore human relationships and emotions, particularly love, using a combination of polished and matte surfaces to create contrast and depth.
In “3 Generations,” the three figures likely represent child, parent, and grandparent, symbolizing the continuity of family and the passage of love through time. The abstract treatment emphasizes the symbolic rather than literal, with stylized shapes and interlocking forms that encourage the viewer to perceive the emotional connections between the figures. Polished areas reflect light, giving the forms vitality, while matte sections provide texture and contrast, enhancing the overall composition.
The sculpture has a commanding presence due to its height, yet its proportions make it suitable for indoor display. The arrangement of the figures suggests unity and interdependence, and viewing the piece from different angles reveals shifting relationships among the forms. Rooted in the Shona sculptural tradition, this piece carries universal themes of family and human connection, making it both culturally significant and emotionally resonant. As a one-of-a-kind work, it embodies Choloka’s artistic focus on love, continuity, and the human bond, turning stone into a philosophical statement that transcends mere representation.
