Fungai Dodzo

BORN:
Fungai Dodzo was born in Mutare, on the border of Zimbabwe and Mozambique.

EARLY LIFE:
Fungai grew up in a family of five and completed his schooling up to O’levels in Mutare. From an early age, he showed an interest in sculpture and was inspired by Robert Kwechete, a prominent figure in Zimbabwean stone carving. Fungai trained briefly under Robert before branching out to develop his own artistic practice.

LIVES:
He is based in Zimbabwe and is married with two daughters, Irene and Lillian.

CAREER:
Fungai has established himself as an emerging sculptor, developing a distinctive style within the Zimbabwean stone carving tradition. His early mentorship under Robert Kwechete provided a foundation in technique and observation, which he now applies to his own works. He is actively focused on advancing his career and exploring new directions in sculpture.

MATERIALS:
Fungai primarily works with stone, continuing the legacy of Zimbabwean stone sculpture, emphasising form, texture, and the natural qualities of the material.

STYLE AND SUBJECTS:
His sculptures are informed by the Shona tradition but are increasingly personal, reflecting his individual vision. While early works show the influence of his mentor, his recent pieces demonstrate originality, capturing both human and natural themes.

AWARDS AND EXHIBITIONS:
Although Fungai is still developing his career, his work has gained recognition within local circles of Zimbabwean sculptors, and he continues to participate in exhibitions to broaden his audience and professional reach.
