United Family by Fungai Dodzo, Stone, Unique, 188cm high by 72cm wide by 40cm deep, Animals and Birds, Nature, Shona sculpture
United Family by Fungai Dodzo is a unique Shona stone sculpture measuring 188 cm high, 72 cm wide, and 40 cm deep. The piece portrays a family of five gazelles intertwined in a single, flowing form. Each gazelle connects seamlessly to the others, their bodies merging into one continuous structure that rises elegantly upward. Yet, despite their unity, each head remains distinct.
At the top, the largest gazelle wears a grand pair of curved antlers, creating a sense of hierarchy and protection. Below it, four smaller heads emerge, their faces turned in different directions as if watching over one another. The sculptor captures both strength and tenderness through this vertical composition, emphasizing balance and connection within the family group.
The piece maintains an abstract design, focusing on simplified shapes rather than fine detail. Only the heads and ears carry definition, while the rest of the forms curve and twist smoothly together. The surface is carefully smoothed and polished, creating a striking black sheen that reflects light beautifully. This finish enhances the sculpture’s sense of movement and unity, allowing the viewer’s eye to follow its continuous lines effortlessly.
United Family embodies harmony, togetherness, and the strength of kinship. Through its elegant abstraction and fluid craftsmanship, Fungai Dodzo transforms solid stone into a living symbol of connection and grace.
