Paul Riley, Siren I, Stoneware on Wood Plinth, Unique, 150 cm high
Paul Riley’s Siren I commands attention with its bold interplay of form, texture, and balance. Standing 150 centimetres high on a simple wooden plinth, this unique sculpture combines abstract stoneware shapes stacked in a vertical arrangement, culminating in a subtle yet recognizable facial composition. Rather than presenting a conventional figure, Riley deconstructs the human visage, suggesting personality and expression through carefully arranged geometric and organic forms.
From the base upward, the sculpture engages viewers in a visual journey. Rounded and angular shapes alternate, creating tension and rhythm that guides the eye toward the top. There, the final elements coalesce into a face, evoking recognition while maintaining abstraction. This progression encourages closer inspection, rewarding viewers who explore the relationships between each individual piece. Consequently, the work feels alive, as though each shape contributes to a larger, emergent identity.
Moreover, Riley’s combination of materials enhances the piece’s impact. The stoneware’s weight and texture contrast with the smooth warmth of the wooden plinth, grounding the sculpture while emphasizing its vertical dynamism. Light interacts differently with each surface, highlighting subtle variations in tone and contour, and changing the sculpture’s appearance as the viewer moves around it.
Ultimately, Siren I exemplifies the harmony between abstraction and suggestion. Through the deliberate stacking of forms, Riley captures the essence of human expression while celebrating materiality and balance. The sculpture draws viewers into a dialogue between shape, space, and recognition, transforming simple elements into a compelling, dynamic presence.
