Paul Riley was born in 1944 in Warwickshire, he passed away in 2019.

Early Life
Riley demonstrated an early talent for watercolour painting while at grammar school, where his father worked as an art master.

Education
He studied at Kingston College of Art and, at the age of 16, exhibited work at the Royal Academy.

Career
In the years following his studies, Riley held his first solo exhibition at Richmond Art Gallery and established himself professionally. During the 1970s, he worked as an architectural painter. In 1979, he relocated to Devon, where after five years of lecturing he founded Coombe Farm Studios, a centre dedicated to teaching arts and crafts. Later in his career, he exhibited at the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours and the Royal Watercolour Society, and held solo exhibitions at Chris Beetles Ltd in 1990 and The Catto Gallery in 2001.

Materials
Riley worked primarily in watercolour but also explored sculpture, using materials such as stone, stoneware, and resin.

Style & Subject
He was known for expressive and vibrant watercolours, particularly in floral subjects, as reflected in his book Flower Painting: How to Paint Free and Vibrant Watercolours.
