Lament by Terry Ryall, Welded Steel, 185cm high. Unique
Lament by Terry Ryall is a power sculpture, it blends abstract and figurative elements to express a deep sense of sorrow or reflection.
The figure, though stylised, evokes a strong human presence, bowed, weighted, or reaching inward. Sharp lines and angular planes give the piece an expressive tension, while the raw, industrial surface of the steel adds to its gravity. The title Lament reinforces the emotional intensity, hinting at loss, grief, or remembrance.
Despite the hardness of the material, Ryall shapes the steel with sensitivity. The figure appears caught in a moment of stillness, frozen mid-thought or mid-motion. Negative space plays an important role, allowing light and landscape to interact with the sculpture, altering its mood throughout the day.
Set in a garden or open space, Lament becomes a meditative focal point. It invites quiet observation and emotional resonance, offering a moment of pause in contrast to its surroundings. With this work, Ryall transforms steel into a medium of vulnerability and expression, balancing strength with fragility, abstraction with humanity.
