Septimisequus by Simon Evans, Plate Steel, Unique, 355 cm high × 370 cm wide × 110 cm deep
Simon Evans’ Septimisequus is a monumental abstract sculpture crafted from plate steel. Towering over viewers at over three and a half meters in height, the work references the form of a horse, yet it is far from a literal representation. Instead, Evans breaks down and reimagines equine anatomy through an industrial lens, fusing organic motion with geometric structure.
The sculpture’s title combines the Latin “septem” (seven) and “equus” (horse), perhaps alluding to a conceptual layering or fragmentation of the horse’s identity. Constructed from sharply angled steel planes, the work captures the animal’s power, grace, and tension in a bold, architectural language. The steel surfaces, weathered, raw, or polished, introduce a tactile quality that plays with light and shadow, enhancing the sculpture’s sense of mass and movement.
Evans’ use of steel, cold, heavy, and rigid, contrasts sharply with the subject’s natural fluidity. Yet, through abstraction and scale, he evokes the essence of the horse: its strength, spirit, and mythic presence.
In this piece, as in much of his work, Evans blurs the boundary between figuration and abstraction. He challenges the viewer to find familiarity in form while navigating the sculpture’s imposing and fragmented geometry. The result is a powerful visual and physical encounter with a creature both recognizable and reimagined.

Delivery and installation will be provided by The Sculpture Park for mainland Great Britain, excluding the Channel Islands, Scottish Highlands and Republic of Ireland. A mainland courier company will handle any onward shipping.
