Pointing Up (1982) by John Foster, Steel, Unique, 330cm high by 60cm wide by 25cm deep, Abstract sculpture, Industrial
A abstract mild steel sculpture of a tall spike with a flared out base.
Pointing Up (1982) by John Foster is a commanding abstract sculpture crafted from mild steel, standing 330cm high by 60cm wide and 25cm deep. This unique work exemplifies Foster’s engagement with industrial materials and minimalist form, transforming raw steel into a powerful expression of balance, tension, and upward motion.
The sculpture takes the shape of a tall, tapering spike that thrusts confidently toward the sky, its dynamic verticality suggesting both aspiration and precision. The flared base anchors the form with a sense of stability, contrasting the narrow, ascending point above. The surface of the steel retains subtle industrial textures: grinding marks, weld seams, and a natural patina, that speak to the physical process of its creation.
Pointing Up captures the aesthetic of the machine age while maintaining a timeless sculptural elegance. Its linear simplicity and monumental scale make it both a statement of human ingenuity and a meditation on direction, ambition, and the dialogue between earth and sky. Whether displayed in an urban area or a park, the work commands space with quiet authority and enduring strength.
