Ready for take off (Dragonfly) by Matt Wass, Mixed Metal, Parts from a 5 Tonne Volvo Digger machinery parts. Car parts, nuts and laser engraved mirrored acrylic and a concrete base, Unique. 145cm high by 315cm wide by 290cm deep, Insect, Colourful, sculpture

This piece by Matt Wass is a striking mixed metal sculpture that celebrates nature through reclaimed industry. Measuring an impressive 145cm high, 315cm wide, and 290cm deep, this one-of-a-kind dragonfly commands space with its bold wingspan and intricate details.

Crafted from found machinery and salvaged car parts, the sculpture transforms once-forgotten metal into a lively symbol of flight and freedom. Its wings burst with vibrant colours that catch the light, contrasting beautifully with the raw metallic body. Gears, bolts, and old panels form the dragonfly’s frame, each piece carefully arranged to mimic the delicate strength of an insect in motion.

The outstretched wings seem to hover mid-beat, as if the dragonfly is moments away from lifting into the air. From every angle, the piece reveals clever details, engine parts become veins in the wings, while welded joints mimic the creature’s slender limbs.

Though made from cold metal, the sculpture feels full of energy and life. It speaks to transformation, how discarded industrial scraps can find new purpose when reshaped by an artist’s hands.

Ready for Take Off (Dragonfly) brings nature and machinery together in perfect balance. It invites viewers to see beauty where they might least expect it. Turning scrap into flight, metal into poetry, and stillness into motion.
