Wilfred Pritchard, This Way To The Centre Of The Earth, Bronze, Corten and Stainless Steel, Unique, Approx. 180cms high, Born 1970

This Way To The Centre Of The Earth by Wilfred Pritchard is a bold, large-scale sculpture combining bronze, corten, and stainless steel. Standing approximately 180 cm high, it presents an abstract representation of a plumb bob suspended on a short wire from an arrow. The arrow connects to an angled structure, which bears the inscription “This way to the Centre of the Earth”, adding both direction and narrative to the work.

The sculpture rises from a flat triangular base, giving stability and contrast to the suspended element above. A small disk beneath the plumb bob emphasizes its point of suspension and draws the eye downward. Reinforcing the vertical tension of the piece. The combination of metals creates visual contrast. The warm tones of corten, the cool gleam of stainless steel, and the subtle richness of bronze interact with light, adding depth and texture.

The design balances abstraction with suggestion, evoking navigation, gravity, and exploration. The suspended plumb bob hints at measurement and precision, while the angled structure and arrow convey movement and direction. The inscription adds a layer of curiosity and playfulness, inviting viewers to engage both physically and mentally with the sculpture.

Through material contrast and geometric clarity, Pritchard transforms industrial forms into a contemplative work. This Way To The Centre Of The Earth combines architectural strength with poetic intent. Turning simple mechanical elements into a striking and thought-provoking statement. Its presence anchors any space while encouraging reflection on gravity, direction, and discovery.
