Chakana by Richard Marti, Forged iron ships chain, with walnut base, Unique, 54cm high, 43cm wide, 23cm deep

Chakana, or Inca Cross, by Richard Marti is a striking sculpture that combines ancient symbolism with contemporary design. This unique piece is crafted from forged iron ship’s chain and mounted on a rich walnut base. Together, these materials create a dynamic contrast between rugged industrial strength and smooth natural warmth.

The Chakana represents a sacred Andean symbol. It embodies balance, connection, and the integration of the physical and spiritual worlds. In this work, Marti interprets the symbol with a bold, industrial edge. Moreover, the repurposed ship chain adds texture and heft, evoking durability and resilience. At the same time, the smooth walnut base highlights the rough iron, creating a striking balance between refinement and rawness.

As a result, the sculpture works perfectly as a focal point for both indoor and outdoor exhibitions. It engages viewers through its visual impact while also carrying deep cultural significance. Furthermore, it demonstrates how traditional symbolism can inspire modern artistic expression.

Richard Marti began his artistic journey as a garden designer. In 2007, he received his first commission to create a sculpture, and since then, he has completed over 200 works of art. In addition to his sculpture practice, Marti is recognized by his clients as a product designer and artist, all while maintaining his core expertise in horticulture.

Ultimately, Chakana stands as a meaningful work of art that blends strength, symbolism, and design. Through its presence, it invites viewers to reflect on the enduring power of ancient symbols and the beauty of industrial materials brought to life in harmony.
