Caprice by Richard Cresswell, Stainless Steel, Metal, Steel, Signed Edition 1 of 9, 350cm high by 28cm wide by 150cm deep, Boat, Ship, Water Feature, Kinetic, Nautical sculpture

Caprice by Richard Cresswell immediately captures attention with its sleek, nautical elegance and dynamic motion. This signed stainless steel sculpture, edition 1 of 9, stands 350 centimetres high, 28 centimetres wide, and 150 centimetres deep. At first glance, the piece presents a small sailboat, yet its kinetic design transforms it from static art into a lively interaction with wind and water, and consequently engages viewers in an ever changing visual experience.

Cresswell combines precision engineering with artistic vision to bring movement to the sculpture. Moreover, the stainless steel surfaces reflect light beautifully, creating shifting highlights as the sail rocks and tilts. Meanwhile, the delicate balance of the boat’s structure allows the kinetic elements to respond gracefully to subtle air currents, emphasizing the illusion of gliding across water. The verticality of the mast contrasts with the gentle sway of the sail, producing a visual rhythm that draws the eye upward and across the sculpture.

As observers move around Caprice, additional details emerge. The finely polished steel edges capture reflections of the surrounding environment, and the pivoting sail introduces a playful unpredictability. Furthermore, the sculpture’s proportions, slender yet tall, emphasize both elegance and tension, echoing the real life experience of sailing. The kinetic aspect invites repeated observation, as the sail’s movement continually alters the perception of space and light.

Ultimately, Caprice transcends traditional sculpture by combining form, motion, and reflection. Through stainless steel and careful engineering, Cresswell transforms a simple sailboat into a mesmerizing visual and kinetic experience, celebrating both the beauty of nautical design and the ever-changing dynamics of nature.
