Waiting to Engage by Peter Kanangi, Springstone, Unique, 26cm high by 30cm wide by 34cm deep, Body, Figurative sculpture
This piece by Peter Kanangi is a refined figurative Shona sculpture carved from Springstone, measuring 26 cm high, 30 cm wide, and 34 cm deep. Despite its modest scale, the piece carries a strong sense of presence and quiet confidence.
The sculpture presents the bust of a woman turning to look over her shoulder. Immediately, the pose suggests anticipation and awareness. Her neck rises long and slender from the torso, then gently twists as her head turns to the side. As a result, the movement feels natural and fluid. Her expression remains calm and subtly joyful, adding warmth and approachability to the work.
The form focuses on the upper body. Part of her chest appears, yet the shoulders and arms fall away. This choice draws attention to posture, expression, and gesture rather than anatomy. Meanwhile, her hair lifts upward from her head before flowing down behind it. This upward motion adds elegance and visual balance.
Kanangi uses contrast to great effect. He smooths and polishes the hair, jewellery, and facial features to a deep, rich black. In contrast, he leaves the skin slightly more rugged, allowing a softer grey tone to emerge. Furthermore, the back of the hair retains raw, uncarved stone, grounding the refined figure in its natural material.
Overall, Waiting to Engage feels poised and intimate. It captures a quiet moment filled with expectation, strength, and graceful restraint.
