The Big Fish by Emmanuel Changunda, Springstone & Metal, Unique, 90cm wide, 50cm high, 20cm deep, Aquatic sculpture

This piece by Emmanuel Changunda is a Shona sculpture made from Springstone, metal, and copper. It measures 90 cm wide, 50 cm high, and 20 cm deep.

The fish rises from a rock base, held by two thin metal rods. These supports lift the piece, creating a sense of floating and motion. The body is flat and carved from grey Springstone. Shallow lines across the sides mark the scales and define the mouth. A large circular hole in the face forms an eye, drawing attention and giving the piece a stylized, graphic quality.

Transitioning from stone to metal, the tail extends as a flat copper piece. Its warm tone contrasts with the cool grey of the stone. This combination of materials adds depth and visual interest. The smooth, flat surfaces of the body meet the subtle texture of the carved lines, emphasizing form and movement.

Despite abstraction, the fish remains instantly recognizable. Its simplified body, etched scales, and open eye focus on shape rather than realism. The elevated form and elongated lines guide the viewer’s eye across the sculpture, reinforcing a dynamic, lively impression.

Through the interplay of stone, metal, and copper, Changunda balances solidity and lightness. The sculpture embodies elegance, playfulness, and Shona sculptural tradition. Its careful composition transforms a simple aquatic form into a striking contemporary artwork, full of character and energy.
