The Acrobats by John Robinson, Bronze Resin, Edition From 7, Signed John, 450cm high by 200cm wide by 150cm deep

John Robinson’s The Acrobats immediately commands attention with its monumental scale and extraordinary display of human skill. Standing 4.5 metres high, 2 metres wide, and 1.5 metres deep, the sculpture depicts two male acrobats performing a breathtaking feat. One figure remains firmly grounded, while the other balances on a single hand, creating a dramatic sense of tension and upward momentum. Consequently, the viewer experiences both the physical strength and fluid grace of the intertwined bodies.

Robinson conceived this iconic piece during a trip to Greece in the 1970s, drawing inspiration from Olympian athletes dating back to the 8th century BC. He began with a 16-inch bronze Marquette and carefully scaled it up to monumental proportions. To ensure stability and facilitate transport, he ingeniously reinforced the upper acrobat’s wrist with a steel rod. The first cast appeared at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Maui, Hawaii, and subsequent editions now stand worldwide, including outside the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra.

The bronze resin surfaces enhance the sculpture’s dynamic effect. Smooth finishes emphasize the muscular anatomy, while the interplay of forms conveys both balance and collaboration. Furthermore, the acrobats’ intertwined posture expresses trust, discipline, and harmony, transforming a display of physical skill into a poetic exploration of human connection.

Through The Acrobats, Robinson blends classical inspiration with contemporary execution. The sculpture celebrates the timeless beauty of the human form, the discipline of the performing arts, and the exhilaration of shared effort. Its scale, energy, and precise anatomy create a commanding presence, while each viewing angle reveals subtle nuances of tension, grace, and collaborative strength.
